Our post EU referendum update – It's business as usual

graph1Following the momentous decision made by British voters in the EU referendum some candidates have been asking us what we think the impact will be on their current job search. The initial turmoil in financial markets in the immediate aftermath of the Brexit vote has un-nerved many people but, in reality, there is often a major disconnect between the markets (where various speculative forces are in play) and the "real" economy we all work in. As the Chancellor and Mervyn King (the former Governor of the Bank of England) emphasised on the Monday after the vote, the fundamentals within the UK economy remain strong.

We recruit for many international accounting firms (and the tax teams for lots of global / large FTSE groups) as well as large numbers of national, regional and independent firms. Not one client has suggested that their recruitment plans are in any way adversely affected by recent events.

It seems likely that the process of the UK negotiating its exit from the EU will take well over two years and who knows what will happen during that period within the EU itself and the UK government. The eventual exit may not be the draconian split that is currently suggested and the UK's future trading relationship with the EU may not be so different than it is now.  Any changes that ultimately come to pass are unlikely to happen very quickly.

Clearly there is going to be some continuing uncertainty and there will inevitably be longer term economic ramifications good, bad or mixed. However our advice to candidates is to work on the basis that it is "business as usual" and focus on their future career opportunities with a positive outlook.

Refer a friend and grab a grand!

As you may well know we operate a referral scheme and details are set out on our website at www.taxrecruit.co.uk/referrals. Under this scheme we generally pay £250 to candidates and contacts who recommend friends and colleagues whom we subsequently place in a new role. It's the time of year for Black Friday sales and "winter warmer" bargains and we didn't want to miss out on the seasonal offer frenzy, so for December 2015 and January 2016 we are introducing an enhanced referral scheme and will increase the referral reward from £250 to £1,000 per referral.

We all know that outgoings increase massively in the run up to Christmas and the New Year – why not get some help with those troublesome New Year credit card bills by referring a friend now?

Please contact us if you want to refer a friend or colleague.

North East CIOT Annual Dinner

Longman Tax Recruitment was delighted to sponsor the Annual Dinner for North East branch of the CIOT earlier this year, held at the Centre for Life in Newcastle. It was an excellent turn out with over 170 attendees and guest speaker Steve Cram proved a popular choice and inspiration to some attendees who later went on to complete the famous great north run! A great night was had by all and some of the photographs from the event can be viewed in the gallery below.

Longman Tax Recruitment is also pleased to be continuing its association with the North East branch into the 2015/16 programme including sponsorship of both the lecture programme and the 2016 annual dinner which will be held in March 2016.

Pump up the volume!

Pump up the volume!

A report was published recently suggesting that candidates perform better at interview if they have just listened to a song with a strong beat to get them fired up for the interview. Sounds like sensible advice to us – not to mention a good excuse for our consultants to share their musical tastes with the wider world.

So here are the songs that each of us would recommend to get you into the correct frame of mind for that all important first interview with a potential new employer.

Alison Riordan – Counting Stars – One Republic

Ian Riley – Let go – Calvin Harris

Longman Tax Recruitment's 2014 Tax Career Satisfaction survey – the results!

Longman Tax Recruitment's 2014 Tax Career Satisfaction survey – the results!

We recently conducted a survey amongst tax professional across the North of England and have now analysed the results.

Firstly we would like to thank all of you who took the time to take part in the survey. Last year many of our clients requested copies of the survey report and some entered into subsequent dialogue with us over some of the findings. So we like to think that employers are taking heed of some of the issues you are identifying.

Amongst the interesting findings this year are that:-

·         60% of respondents say that their employer respects the need for a work life balance

·         55% feel they have the opportunity to progress their career with their current firms

·         Over 10% received a bonus in 2013 that was more than 10% of their salary.

If you would like a copy of the full survey results please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

If you want to discuss any aspects of the survey or find out how current market conditions impact on finding tax jobs in the North of England please get in touch.
